Valley of flowers- a romantic place near Nanda Devi Mountains

Valley of flowers - Nanda Devi Mountains
Valley of flowers is one of the special attractions during a visit of Nanda Devi. The valley tucked at just twenty km from Nanda Devi National park  is the most beautiful valley adorned with variety of rare flower varieties. It is located between the Zanskar Mountains and the Himalayas. It can be divided into lower alpine, sub alpine and the upper alpine region. The hills surrounding the lower zones are densely forested.

The Forest research institute monitoring this valley has recorded around six hundred varieties of angiosperms and thirty pteridophytes. Out of a total of thirty-one rare species of plants, many are found in the jungles of the valley of flowers. Around forty-five species of medicinal plants are found in these jungles. Sub-alpine zones in the park help retaining moisture and snow at the same time supporting large number of floral species. The lower alpine zone consists of deep soil and moisture, where many herbal communities grow in abundance such as cushion shrubs, dwarf shrubs and grass. The valley holds great importance amongst mountaineers and local ayurvedic doctors, since it preserves rare medicinal herbs. The valley of flowers is the second core zone of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. This place which was unknown to the outside world was brought into focus by two British mountaineers while returning from their expedition to Mt Kamet. Having lost their way they accidentally arrived at this place full of colorful flowers evoking a romantic spirit.

The duo was so impressed by the beauty of this region that they named it “Valley of Flowers”. This is how this region in the wilderness became popular for its scenic views and an incredible variety of flowers. This is really a place worth visiting during your tour of the Nanda Devi Mountains which is tucked in-between the valleys of Goriganga and Rishiganga.
